Flowing through Kentmere, Staveley, Burneside, Kendal, Sedgwick and out into Morecambe Bay, the river takes a varied course - passing through rural landscapes and once-industrial regions.
The manor of Burton is chiefly of the Marquis division of the ancient Barony of Kendal, and is held of the crown by a yearly quit-rent of £1. 11s., paid to the Earl of Lonsdale as lessee.
